Real Pearls or Fake Pearls how to tell the difference

Real vs Fake Pearls: How to Tell the Difference

Pearls have long symbolised elegance, grace, and timeless beauty. But not all pearls are created equal. With so many imitations on the market, it can be hard to know if you're buying the real thing.

At Mattina Sera Jewellery, we use genuine freshwater pearls in most of our designs—each one uniquely beautiful, carefully selected, and handcrafted into elegant bridal and everyday pieces.

And when we do use faux pearls (for specific waterproof or costume styles), we always clearly state it in the product description—so you can make an informed choice.

In this guide, we’ll help you understand the key differences between real and fake pearls, and why it matters when choosing jewellery for your special moments.

What Are Real Pearls?

Real pearls are formed naturally or through cultured methods inside oysters or mussels. They’re organic gemstones made of layers of nacre (the same material that gives them their signature glow). No two are exactly the same—each pearl has slight variations in shape, surface, and colour.

Freshwater pearls, like the ones we use in our designs, are cultivated in lakes and rivers and are known for their soft lustre, beautiful imperfections, and variety of shapes.

What Are Fake Pearls?

Fake pearls (also called imitation or costume pearls) are usually made from plastic, glass, or shell beads coated with a synthetic layer to mimic the look of real pearls.

While they may look nice at first glance, they often lack the depth, weight, and durability of real pearls—and the coating can flake or peel over time.

How to Tell If Pearls Are Real

Here are a few simple ways to spot the difference between real and fake pearls:

The Tooth Test
Gently rub a pearl against the edge of your tooth.
Real pearls feel slightly gritty due to their natural layers. Fake pearls feel smooth and glassy.

Surface & Shape
Real pearls have tiny imperfections and variations in shape. If all the pearls are identical and perfectly round, they’re likely imitation.

Lustre
Real pearls have a deep, multi-dimensional glow, almost like light is coming from within. Fake pearls often look flat or overly shiny.

Weight
Real pearls feel heavier in the hand. Fakes, especially plastic ones, feel much lighter.

Drill Holes
Real pearls tend to have small, clean drill holes. Fake pearls may show flaking, chipping, or uneven coating around the holes.

Why Choose Real Pearls?

Real pearls aren’t just more beautiful—they carry meaning, heritage, and lasting value.

They’re more durable, unique in shape and character, and make your jewellery feel that much more personal. They’re perfect for weddings, gifts, heirlooms, or everyday wear that still feels special.

Our Commitment to Transparency and Quality

At Mattina Sera Jewellery, our pearl pieces are carefully handcrafted using authentic freshwater pearls, unless clearly stated otherwise.

We only use faux pearls in select styles where needed—for example, in waterproof jewellery collections where natural pearls may not be suitable. And in those cases, you’ll always see faux pearl noted in the product description—so there are no surprises.

Because your trust means everything.
